Sacred Aromatics
Resins, Woods & Roots · Six Doorways into the Book of Changes
What remains when the smoke has gone?
An offering of incense leaves little we can hold. Its fragrance enters a room, its smoke rises, and then it disappears. Yet the moment may remain with us.
Salvatore Battaglia’s two Sacred Scents sessions explore aromatic materials in offering, prayer and remembrance. At Artemisia, this becomes a meeting place for botanical study, symbolic reading and everyday ritual: not making different traditions identical, but noticing how scent invites us to pause.
Meet Frankincense, Myrrh, Agarwood/Oud, Sandalwood and Spikenard, with Yakusugi explored alongside the related Japanese Cedar/Sugi guide.
Adapted from Salvatore Battaglia’s Sacred Scents, Sessions 1 & 2 handouts (2021). Interpretation, hexagram questions, music and product selections: Artemisia.
Incense as Offering · What Is Given Away?
In Session 1, Battaglia presents incense as an offering through which communities expressed relationships between human life and the divine. Unlike an offering that also provided food, incense was consumed in its burning. Its value lay in what was given, not in what could be kept.
This offers a question for personal reflection: what makes a moment meaningful when nothing tangible remains? Attention, intention and a deliberate pause can be enough.
Smoke, Breath & Prayer
The handout explores rising smoke as an image of communication from earth toward the divine. Smoke also becomes a symbol of breath, life and soul: a language of cultural and devotional meaning.
Why Woods & Resins?
Drawing on Margaret E. Kenna’s study of smell in Greek Orthodoxy, Battaglia contrasts the fleeting beauty of flowers with the endurance associated with woods and resins. The contrast is symbolic: flowers suggest passing life; durable materials invite images of continuity and remembrance.
A Shared Scent · A Shared Space
Kenna’s interpretation also gives incense a communal role. A common scent surrounds those gathered, softening differences in personal smell and social position. The ritual creates a shared sensory setting.
Different Traditions, Different Meanings
Session 1 describes a Christian symbolic pairing: Frankincense associated with divinity and Myrrh with embodied life, sacrifice and mortality. The two scents frame a story of birth and death rather than a single interchangeable meaning.
Through James McHugh’s Sandalwood and Carrion, the handout turns toward Indian religious culture: scented bathing waters, pastes and incense have distinct places in worship. Its discussion of the Gandhasara, the “Essence of Perfume,” places perfumery within dharma, artha and kama: ethical order, worldly aims and pleasure.
Material, preparation, recipient and intention all matter. An essential oil, an incense offering and a finished skincare product each have their own place.
Scent, Music & Remembrance
Artemisia adds an optional listening companion: Purcell’s Dido’s Lament. Let scent and music accompany a quiet moment of listening, remembrance or reflection. Fragrance is optional.
Henry Purcell · Andreas Scholl · Accademia Bizantina · Stefano Montanari
From Symbol to Substance · “Spiritual Molecules”?
Session 2 opens a question about aromatic chemistry. Sesquiterpenes and related oxygen-containing compounds occur in many aromatic woods, roots and resins. Chemistry offers one way to study the material; cultural meaning offers another.
The oils do not share one uniform composition. Frankincense profiles can be rich in monoterpenes and vary by species and batch. The santalols of Sandalwood, furanosesquiterpenes of Myrrh and complex profiles of Oud and Spikenard open a chemical reading path alongside the cultural one. Composition alone does not establish spiritual or therapeutic effects.
Six Aromatic Doorways · Read, Explore, Choose
Frankincense · Fresh Resin & Citrus
Boswellia carterii can offer a fresh, lemon-like opening, a peppery accent and a woody-balsamic base. Several Boswellia species yield this aromatic material; their identities and origins are not interchangeable.
Bring its resinous character into a facial-care or rinse-off format.

Myrrh · Warm Spice & Balsamic Depth

Agarwood / Oud · Layered Woody Depth
Fragrant, resin-enriched wood forms in Aquilaria trees in response to injury and biological stress. It is not simply the ordinary wood of a healthy tree. The aroma can weave woody, earthy, musky and soft fruity-floral facets.

Sandalwood · Soft, Lasting Wood
Santalum album oil comes from heartwood. Its soft, sweet-woody, milky-balsamic profile has a lingering character rather than a sharp opening. Santalols are important components of its aroma.

Spikenard · Earthy Roots & Spicy Warmth
Nardostachys jatamansi. The oil is distilled from roots and rhizomes, with a dense woody, spicy and earthy character. This is the root-based material in our title.
Nidra’s listed ingredients pair it with Sandalwood and other aromatics in sweet almond oil.
Yakusugi · A Specific Old-Wood Story
The handout describes oil from old dead wood of Cryptomeria japonica from Yakushima, with subtle woody, sweet-resinous, earthy and mossy facets. Yakusugi is a specific sourcing context, not a synonym for every Sugi / Japanese Cedar oil.
Nihon no Mori lists Sugi. Explore it as a related forest-inspired product, not a verified Yakusugi formulation.
Further Reading · Amyris
Amyris balsamifera remains an additional woody-aromatic path from the original article, separate from Battaglia’s six materials.
Six Doorways into the Book of Changes
The I Ching offers sixty-four patterns through which to contemplate change. Here, the pairings presented in Artemisia’s monographs become six invitations to reflection, not a fixed sequence or promises about what fragrance will do.
Solid lines are yang; broken lines are yin.
Frankincense · 17 · Following · 隨 · Suí
Upper: Lake ☱ · Lower: Thunder ☳
What deserves to be followed? An offering invites us to choose where our attention goes: habit, urgency or something we genuinely value.

Can I make room to receive? Not every moment asks us to act. Sometimes the practice is listening without immediately explaining.

How do I meet uncertainty? The botanical story invites reflection, not a claim that suffering is necessary or good. What helps me take the next careful step?
Sandalwood · 42 · Increase · 益 · Yì
Upper: Wind ☴ · Lower: Thunder ☳
What kind of increase matters? More attention, generosity or care may enrich a day without making it more crowded.
Spikenard · 47 · Oppression · 困 · Kùn

What remains when resources feel limited? Recognize limits without losing touch with what matters. Sometimes a practice becomes more meaningful when it becomes smaller.

Upper: Fire ☲ · Lower: Thunder ☳
What needs to become clear? Consider an unresolved matter that needs a clear decision. This is the related Sugi reading path, not a verified Yakusugi assignment.
Pairings follow Artemisia’s current library, inspired by Jonathan Benavides & Manuel Silva; they are not an independently verified reproduction of the source system. These reflective questions are Artemisia’s own interpretation, separate from Salvatore Battaglia’s teaching.
Precious Materials · Thoughtful Sourcing
The 2021 handout highlights harvesting pressure on Agarwood, Sandalwood and Spikenard. Thoughtful appreciation begins with knowing the material.
Ask about the botanical species, country of origin, plant part and cultivated or wild-harvested source. Look for sourcing evidence rather than relying on a beautiful scent or a “sacred” name.
A Quiet Personal Ritual
Choose one doorway. Read its hexagram and write a sentence in response to the question. Sit comfortably, listen if you wish, and notice your natural breath without forcing it. Fragrance is optional; the practice stands without scent.
This is the thread Artemisia holds: botanical specificity, symbolic curiosity and something meaningful to carry into ordinary life.
Use finished products separately according to their labels. Do not apply undiluted essential oils to skin, ingest them or use them as incense. Smoke is not needed for this practice. Stop if uncomfortable. This is reflection, not treatment for grief or a substitute for professional support.

Nardostachys jatamansi.
