Making Sense of Aromatherapy Research
GC/MS Quality · Cochrane Evidence · 6 Clinical Studies · ARQAT Standards · The 2025 Mechanistic Breakthrough
If you've ever wondered whether aromatherapy actually works — you're asking the right question. The honest answer: the evidence is promising, the mechanisms are now well-understood, and oil quality is the critical variable that most studies got wrong.
At Artemisia, we source exclusively from suppliers who provide GC/MS (Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry) laboratory documentation — the gold standard for verifying essential oil purity and composition. We are formulators, not distillers: we choose our suppliers specifically because they hold and provide this documentation.
🎓 Neuroaromatherapy & The Future of the Profession
In his May 2026 continuing education webinar, Salvatore Battaglia presented a compelling case for the evolution of aromatherapy — from a fringe "alternative" therapy to a core component of integrative healthcare. Beginning with the wisdom of Fischer-Rizzi and the spiritual richness lost in modern society, Sal addressed the "aromatherapy paradox": in the Australian aged care sector, usage remains high despite academic reviews labelling evidence for dementia symptoms as "low certainty" or "inconclusive."
His central argument: the failure is not in aromatherapy itself — it is in the methodology used to study it.
Key Concepts
🌿 The Great Pruning — Borrowing from Dr Henry Cloud, Sal argues the standalone therapist model is a "dead branch." The future lies in integration.
🧠 Neuroaromatherapy — Aromatic molecules as physiological regulators of the HPA axis and autonomic nervous system — precisely the mechanisms documented in Men et al. 2025 (Section 2 below).
📋 ARQAT & the TREATS Checklist — The new gold standard for clinical reporting in aromatherapy research.
🌟 Somatic Meaning Makers — Practitioners who re-harmonise botanical authenticity with rigorous scientific standards, meeting a world that craves both spiritual and clinical depth.

🔬 1. What the Cochrane Review Actually Found
The most rigorous systematic review of aromatherapy to date examined evidence across anxiety, pain, sleep, and quality of life. Its headline finding is often misquoted as "aromatherapy doesn't work." That is not what it says. Analysis and commentary: Salvatore Battaglia, 2026 CPD series. © Salvatore Battaglia 2026.
- Sleep: "One of the more promising trends in the entire review." Low-certainty evidence suggests aromatherapy may support restful sleep.
- Anxiety & stress: Consistent signals across multiple populations, constrained by methodological heterogeneity.
- Pain: Emerging positive signals, particularly in obstetric and postoperative contexts.
⚠️ The critical gap: No studies reported oil quality or GC/MS data. Without verification, a "lavender" study might have used synthetic linalool, a diluted product, or a misidentified species. The science was limited not by aromatherapy — but by oil quality and transparency. This is exactly the gap Artemisia closes by sourcing from GC/MS-documented suppliers — and the gap ARQAT was formed to address.
🧬 2. The 2025 Mechanistic Breakthrough
Men L et al. Complementary Therapies in Medicine. 2025;94:103261. doi:10.1016/j.ctim.2025.103261
Men et al. (2025) mapped the molecular machinery behind aromatherapy's effects:
- GABA-A receptors — calming (lavender, valerian)
- Serotonin transporters — mood balance (bergamot, rose)
- HPA axis — stress response modulation (sandalwood, vetiver)
- BDNF/TrkB signalling — neuroplasticity (frankincense, neroli)
Measurable endpoints: Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and salivary cortisol. The question has shifted from "does it work?" to "how precisely does it work?"
🧠 3. Rose Essential Oil Increases Gray Matter Volume
Kokubun K, Nemoto K, Yamakawa Y. Brain Research Bulletin. 2024;208:110896. doi:10.1016/j.brainresbull.2024.110896
Landmark MRI study (Kyoto University), 50 healthy female participants wore rose essential oil for one month. Result: increased gray matter volume in the whole brain and posterior cingulate cortex. The first study to demonstrate that continuous scent inhalation changes brain structure.
Rose (Rosa damascena) is a key oil in our Rose Damascena Serum and Rose Monograph.
🧠 4. Essential Oil Blend Enhances Cognitive Performance & Brain Metabolism
Moss M, Howarth J, Moss H. Human Psychopharmacology. 2025. doi:10.1002/hup.40-e70027
Double-blind study (Northumbria University), 90 participants. The Genius blend produced significant enhancements in memory and executive function, outperformed pure sage, and left participants more alert and less fatigued.
📊 5. Lavender Reduces Stress-Related Brainwave Activity (EEG)
Kwon H et al. Biomedical Science Letters. 2025;31(1):12–18. doi:10.15616/BSL.2025.31.1.12
EEG study (Catholic University of Pusan), 23 adults. Lavender reduced theta, gamma, and middle beta brainwave frequencies — measurable stress relief via olfactory stimulation. Relevant to our Serenity Roll-On.
🌿 6. Frankincense (Boswellia serrata): Phase Ia Clinical Trial
Bonilla Valente IV et al. Breast Cancer Research and Treatment. 2024;204:521–530. doi:10.1007/s10549-023-07215-4
Phase Ia trial (Medical University of South Carolina), 20 breast cancer patients. Control: +54.6% proliferation. Treated: −13.8% reduction (p=0.008). No serious adverse events.
📊 The Body Raising the Bar: ARQAT
Aromatic Research Quality Appraisal Taskforce
Formed in January 2021, ARQAT is an international taskforce united by a single mission: to create, vet, and promote a rigorous tool for research critique setting the highest standard in non-pharmacologic aromatherapy research practice and reporting.
Mission: To create, vet, and promote a tool for research critique that clearly outlines the highest standard in nonpharmacologic aromatherapy research practice and reporting.
Vision: A cohesive aromatherapy research community that all stakeholders — including policy makers, clinicians, and consumers — can trust.
ARQAT directly addresses the methodological failures identified in the Cochrane review — absence of GC/MS data, inconsistent dosing, non-standardised outcome measures.
🧪 Our Quality Standard: GC/MS Verified Suppliers
Every essential oil we use at Artemisia is sourced from suppliers who provide full GC/MS laboratory documentation — verifying species identity, chemical composition, purity, and the absence of adulterants. We are formulators, not distillers: we choose our suppliers specifically because they hold and provide this documentation. This is the standard ARQAT advocates for in all research.
Our Trusted Suppliers
