The Wisdom of Hexagram 24

“Return. Success. Going out and coming in without error. Friends come without blame. To and fro goes the way. On the seventh day comes return. It furthers one to have somewhere to go. Thunder within the earth: the image of the Turning Point. Thus the kings of antiquity closed the passes at the time of solstice. Neither travellers nor merchants went on their way.”

Thunder stirs beneath the Earth — the first movement of Yang energy returning after the darkness of winter. Hexagram 24 — Fu — is the hexagram of the Turning Point: the moment when the tide begins to turn, when light returns after darkness, when the seed stirs beneath the frozen ground. This is not a time for great action — it is a time to honour the returning energy with stillness and receptivity. The ancient kings understood: at the solstice, they closed the passes and let the world rest. Return requires space.

Shadow — Addiction: The compulsive repetition of patterns that no longer serve — the inability to truly return, to begin again. Addiction is the mind’s refusal to let go of what is familiar, even when it is harmful. It is the opposite of Return: the endless loop that prevents the turning point from arriving.
Gift — Invention: When the shadow of addiction releases, what emerges is the gift of Invention — the capacity to see things freshly, to find new solutions, to return to the beginner’s mind. The Inventor does not repeat the past; they discover what wants to emerge next.
Siddhi — Silence: The deepest Return is into Silence — the vast, creative stillness from which all things arise. This is not the silence of absence, but the silence of pure potential.
