In 1532, in the city of Augsburg, an anonymous master illuminator began painting a manuscript that would become one of the most extraordinary documents in the history of Western esotericism. Splendor Solis — "The Splendour of the Sun" — attributed to the legendary Salomon Trismosin, allegedly the teacher of Paracelsus, contains 22 elaborate illuminated images set in ornamental borders of breathtaking beauty. Miniatures in the style of Albrecht Dürer, Hans Holbein, and Lucas Cranach. Gold leaf on vellum. Twenty versions exist worldwide; the earliest is held at the Kupferstichkabinett Berlin.
The Three Treatises: Foundations of the Work
Before the seven planetary flasks, Splendor Solis lays its philosophical foundations across three treatises — eleven plates that establish the principles, the prima materia, and the inner preparation required before the alchemical work can begin. These are not preliminary sketches. They are the map of the territory the soul must traverse.
Plate 1 · The Arms of the Art
The heraldic emblem of alchemy itself. Two suns: the tarnished natural gold below, the bright alchemist's gold above. The three suns in the mouth and eyes of the lower sun embody the alchemical axiom: "three in one and one in three" — the trinity of Salt, Sulphur, and Mercury that underlies all matter. The preface carries a solemn warning: it is better not to begin the art of alchemy at all than to practise it casually. Jung would recognize this immediately — individuation is not a hobby. It is a commitment to the whole of oneself.

Plate 2 · The Philosopher and His Flask
A bearded Philosopher stands in red and blue — the colors of fire and water, of Sol and Luna — pointing to a flask half full of golden liquid: the finished elixir. His scroll reads: "Let us Investigate the four Elements of Nature." The work begins with investigation, with curiosity, with the willingness to look. The four elements — Fire, Water, Air, Earth — are the four dimensions of the psyche that must be understood before they can be transmuted. The Philosopher does not possess the gold yet. He points to it.

Plate 3 · The Knight of the Double Fountain
A knight stands between two fountains, his breastplate bearing the four colors of the alchemical sequence: black, white, citrine, red — the complete map of the work encoded in armor. The double fountain contains Philosophical Mercury and Philosophical Sulphur conjoined. Seven stars circle his head, one for each planet. His sword is the Secret Fire of Pontanus — the inner heat that drives the work, the fire that does not burn but transforms. Jung would call this the libido — the psychic energy that powers individuation.

Plate 4 · The Lunar Queen & the Solar King
The central mystery of the Great Work revealed: the White Queen (Philosophical Mercury) in white, her scroll reading "Virgin's Milk", stands on a living ball of liquid under the Moon. The Red King (Philosophical Sulphur) in red, his scroll reading "Masculine Coagulation", holds a sceptre and stands under the Sun with his feet in fire. Their conjunction — the coniunctio, the Chemical Wedding — is the goal of the entire work. Jung recognized this as the union of the Anima and Animus, the sacred marriage of the contrasexual principles within the psyche.

Plate 5 · Mining the Ore
The prima materia — the raw material of the Great Work — must be drawn from nature. Before any transformation can occur, the raw material must be found, extracted, and brought to the surface. Jung understood this as the necessity of confronting the actual contents of the unconscious — not imagined or idealized, but real, raw, and specific to each individual. You cannot transmute what you have not first mined.

Plate 6 · The Alchemical Tree with Golden Boughs
The crows of the nigredo are dispersed — half have turned white, signaling the transition to albedo. The golden bough enables the materia to pass through fire unscathed. The ladder has seven steps, one for each planet, each flask, each stage of individuation.

Plate 7 · The Drowning King
The King of Earth drowns in a lake — and is rescued by Venus. His robes are citrine, placing this stage between the albedo and the rubedo. His triple crown represents Salt, Sulphur, and Mercury. He has been saved from destructive moisture and renewed with essential moisture. Jung recognized this as the regression in service of the ego: the necessary descent before the ascent.

Plate 8 · The Angel & the Dark Man in the Swamp
The King of Earth has sunk into dark, foul mud — and a feminine angel descends to rescue and elevate him. This is the final redemption of the nigredo. The feminine angel is the Anima in her redemptive aspect: the inner feminine that reaches into the deepest mud of the unconscious and lifts the masculine principle toward the light. Jung called this the anima as psychopomp.

Plate 9 · The Hermaphrodite
The coniunctio embodied in a single figure: the Hermaphrodite, bearing both male and female, two differently colored wings, holding an egg (the Four Elements) and a mirror reflecting the natural landscape. The work has come full circle. Jung saw the Hermaphrodite as the symbol of the Self — the union of all opposites within a single integrated being.

Plate 10 · The Dismembered Body with a Golden Head
A body is dismembered — its four limbs representing the four Elements separated from the Quintessence of the golden head. This is the operation of separatio: the essential must be distinguished from the non-essential, the gold from the dross. The golden head — pure consciousness that survives the dissolution of everything else. Jung recognized this as the differentiation of the psychic functions.
