Alchemy & the Soul: The 12 Operations of Transformation |

Alchemy & the Soul

Twelve operations · Symbolic reflection · Aromatic companions

What asks to be released? What deserves to be kept? What is ready to take form? Alchemy offers images for these questions. Read one operation, sit with its prompt, then explore a plate or a scent that invites further attention.

Carl Gustav Jung’s writings explore alchemical imagery in relation to psychological transformation and individuation. This article offers Artemisia’s contemporary reading inspired by that tradition. Its twelve-operation sequence, element labels, Tarot parallels and aromatic pairings are an editorial framework, not a single universal historical system or a prescribed psychological treatment.

The scent companions retain the choices of the earlier article. Their meanings are poetic invitations, not claims that essential oils remove emotional defences, heal ancestral patterns or produce a particular state of consciousness. These are reading and reflection suggestions, not formulas or application instructions.

One Reading Path, Different Lenses

The Great Map places the traditions beside one another. This guide explores processes; Splendor Solis explores twenty-two images. The twelve operations and twenty-two plates are not one-to-one equivalents.

For a contemporary circle reflection, visit Six Women, One Rose. Its Venus illustration connects to the peacock plate; the connection is symbolic, not proof that historical alchemy and the Gene Keys are the same system.

The Alchemical Triad: Sulfur, Mercury & Salt

The triad supplies a symbolic vocabulary for soul, spirit and body. Here Artemisia uses it as a craft metaphor, not literal chemistry.

Sulfur · Soul: the aromatic character of an essential oil, pictured as the expressive quality of the plant.

Mercury · Spirit: the carrier or hydrosol, pictured as a medium of movement and relationship.

Salt · Body: the finished soap, cream or blend, pictured as an idea given tangible form.

Steam distillation can separate volatile aromatic constituents from plant material. Calling this “liberating the plant’s soul” is poetic language. Not every aromatic material is steam-distilled, and a finished cosmetic is not literally alchemical salt.

1. Calcination · Fire ·

The image: Material reduced by heat. Reflection: Notice a habit or assumption that no longer serves you. Change need not require crisis or self-punishment. The Tower is this guide’s Tarot parallel for disruption that reveals what needs attention.

Ask: What could I stop defending and begin examining?

Aromatic companions: Ginger · Zingiber officinale; Black Pepper · Piper nigrum; Frankincense · Boswellia sacra. A poetic trio for warmth, courage and ritual attention.

2. Dissolution · Water · המסה

The image: A fixed form loosens in liquid. Reflection: Make room for experience that a rigid explanation cannot contain. The High Priestess is this guide’s parallel for listening before deciding.

Ask: Where could curiosity soften certainty?

Aromatic companions: Roman Chamomile · Chamaemelum nobile; Ylang Ylang · Cananga odorata; Myrrh · Commiphora myrrha. Symbolic companions for gentleness, openness and patient listening.

3. Separation · Air ·

The image: Distinguishing one part of a mixture from another. Reflection: Differentiation asks what belongs to you, what belongs to someone else, and what deserves to remain. A boundary can be clear without becoming a judgement.

Ask: What is essential here, and what can I set aside?

Aromatic companions: Peppermint · Mentha piperita; Eucalyptus · Eucalyptus globulus; Juniper Berry · Juniperus communis. A poetic pairing with space and discernment, not a claim that scent establishes psychological boundaries.

4. Conjunction · Earth ·

The image: Separated parts brought into relationship. The coniunctio, or conjunction, is a central theme in Jung’s Mysterium Coniunctionis. Reflection: Integration need not erase difference. Two positions can enter a creative relationship without becoming identical.

Ask: What could I hold together without forcing agreement?

Aromatic companions: Rose · Rosa damascena; Jasmine · Jasminum grandiflorum; Sandalwood · Santalum album. Retained as symbolic companions for relationship and embodied care.

See the King and Queen in plate 4 →

5. Putrefaction · Earth / Water ·

The image: Decomposition and the darkening imagery of nigredo. Reflection: Something that once sustained us may lose its form. The Death card serves here as an invitation to think about endings and change, not literal death or inevitable suffering.

Ask: What has ended, even if I have not yet named it?

Aromatic companions: Vetiver · Chrysopogon zizanioides (syn. Vetiveria zizanioides); Patchouli · Pogostemon cablin; Spikenard · Nardostachys jatamansi. Earth and roots provide the metaphor; the oils are not presented as treatments for grief or ancestral wounds.

6. Fermentation · Air / Water ·

The image: A catalyst brings new activity to a material. Reflection: A conversation, a practice or an unexpected idea can open a direction that neither old position offered. The Star is this guide’s parallel for renewed possibility.

Ask: What small sign of possibility is already present?

Aromatic companions: Bergamot FCF · Citrus bergamia; Geranium · Pelargonium graveolens; Cardamom · Elettaria cardamomum. A symbolic invitation to freshness and renewed participation. FCF identifies a preparation, not a blanket guarantee of safe use.

7. Mortification · Earth ·

The image: An old form loses its hold. Reflection: Set down an inflated or exhausting self-image and notice the person underneath. This is not an invitation to humiliation, deprivation or harm. The Hermit is this guide’s parallel for honest, quiet attention.

Ask: Which role am I tired of performing?

Aromatic companions: Frankincense · Boswellia sacra; Atlas Cedarwood · Cedrus atlantica; Sandalwood · Santalum album. Retained as poetic companions for simplicity and quiet ritual.

8. Sublimation · Air · המראה

The image: A substance passes directly from solid to vapour. Reflection: Step back to gain perspective, then return to what needs doing. The Magician is this guide’s creative parallel; perspective is useful when it does not become an escape from ordinary needs.

Ask: What becomes clearer from a little distance?

Aromatic companions: Lavender · Lavandula angustifolia; Clary Sage · Salvia sclarea; Basil · Ocimum basilicum. A metaphorical trio for pause, imagination and attention.

9. Distillation · Water ·

The image: Evaporation and condensation used to separate components of a mixture. Reflection: Return to an experience and ask what you now understand more clearly. Temperance supplies this guide’s image of movement between vessels.

Steam distillation connects this operation with aromatic craft. It does not establish that all floral essences are made the same way or that a scent “distils wisdom” in the body.

Ask: What remains valuable after I revisit the experience?

Aromatic companions: Neroli · Citrus aurantium; Rose Otto · Rosa damascena; Immortelle · Helichrysum italicum. Retained as companions for a poetic reflection on refinement.

Find another reading path in the Great Map → · Return to the operations

10. Multiplication · Fire ·

The image: The work’s influence extends beyond its first vessel. Reflection: A useful practice may change how we participate in a relationship or community. Sharing does not make someone a healer or place responsibility for others’ wellbeing on them.

Ask: What helpful thing could I share without imposing it?

Aromatic companions: Rose · Rosa damascena; Ylang Ylang · Cananga odorata; Sweet Orange · Citrus sinensis. Poetic companions for generosity and participation.

11. Coagulation · Earth ·

The image: What was fluid takes form. Reflection: Give an insight a practical expression: a promise kept, a boundary honoured or a habit made manageable. The Sun is this guide’s Tarot parallel for something becoming visible in life.

Ask: What one action would give this insight a body?

Aromatic companions: Frankincense · Boswellia sacra; Sandalwood · Santalum album; Vetiver · Chrysopogon zizanioides. Symbolic companions for steadiness and embodiment.

12. Circulatio · All Four Elements ·

The image: Material circulates and the work returns to earlier questions. Reflection: Learning is not necessarily linear. The Ouroboros and Wheel of Fortune offer images of return; revisiting something does not erase what you have learned.

Ask: What familiar question can I meet differently now?

Aromatic companions: Clary Sage · Salvia sclarea; Vetiver · Chrysopogon zizanioides; Rose · Rosa damascena; Frankincense · Boswellia sacra. These names are reflective companions, not a blend formula.

The Spiral Path

Begin with the question that meets you today, not the operation you think you “should” have reached. Read, reflect, choose a manageable practice, then return. Wholeness is a useful invitation; perfection need not be the test.
