Botanical identity
Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew accepts Aloysia citrodora Paláu and records Lippia citrodora as a synonym. The supplied Pranarôm label uses Lippia citriodora. Kew describes an aromatic shrub native to southern Bolivia and northwestern Argentina.
The oil is typically steam-distilled from leaves. It is not interchangeable with a leaf infusion, hydrosol or carrier oil. Distinguish it from common vervain, Verbena officinalis, and lemon myrtle, Backhousia citriodora; similar names do not establish identical uses or traditions.
Aroma and composition
Pranarôm describes its oil as fresh, lemony and soothing, for a calming atmosphere and evening relaxation. These are supplier-attributed aromatic descriptions, not clinical proof or a guarantee of restful sleep.
Pranarôm lists neral, geranial and limonene. Neral and geranial are the isomers grouped as citral. This is not a complete batch analysis; exact percentages require batch documentation.
Dr. Malte Hozzel describes the fragrance as refreshing, tender and uplifting. This sensory description is distinguished from his article’s medical claims and historical associations, which are not adopted here.

Safety before recipes
Skin sensitization and possible phototoxicity require particular caution. AromaWeb’s secondary summary of Robert Tisserand and Rodney Young’s Essential Oil Safety, second edition, reports a dermal maximum of 0.9% and cautions for hypersensitive, damaged or diseased skin and children under two. This reported ceiling is not an Artemisia recipe or finished-product approval.
A reproduced IFRA standard for verbena oil and absolute from Lippia citriodora states that they should not be used as fragrance ingredients because of sensitizing and phototoxic potential. Current IFRA documentation and the exact raw material require professional review. These two sources must not be treated as equivalent permissions.
No anointing, bath or massage formulas, oral doses or leave-on perfume clearance are provided. Do not add essential oil to honey, tea or drinking water on the basis of this guide. Supplier oral directions do not transfer to Maya’s roll-on.
Do not apply undiluted. Avoid eyes and mucous membranes; keep away from children. Obtain qualified advice during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for children, or where medical conditions, medication or fragrance sensitivity affect use. Stop exposure if discomfort occurs.
AromaWeb’s general phototoxicity guidance reports 12–18 hours of UV avoidance when phototoxic oils exceed reference limits. UV avoidance alone does not resolve sensitization or fragrance-standard restrictions and is not permission for an unassessed skin formula.

Symbols, myths and the “love potion”
The story that sparked the phrase
In his public Lemon Verbena article, Dr. Malte Hozzel associates “Verbena” with Venus and love potions. We record this as his modern account, not as independent proof that lemon verbena, Aloysia citrodora, was used in ancient Greek love potions.
Two plants, different historical threads
The Royal Horticultural Society lists “tears of Isis,” “herb of the Cross” and “holy herb” among common names of common vervain, Verbena officinalis. These names document a tradition of naming that plant; they do not establish an Egyptian or Christian origin for lemon verbena oil.
Maud Grieve’s A Modern Herbal: Vervain records Herba veneris and love-related attributions, together with accounts of sacred rites and the Calvary legend. This is a historical herbal’s secondary account, not a primary ancient text. Grieve treats Lemon Verbena separately. We do not transfer vervain’s legends, sacred status or attributed effects to this essential oil merely because both names contain “verbena.”
Artemisia’s original symbols
For this fragrance story, freshness can become an image of a new chapter; a pause with a chosen scent can become an image of listening. These are original creative interpretations, not inherited correspondences or promised effects of the oil.
A little “love potion,” made to celebrate love already chosen. In Maya’s story, the phrase means a fragrance made with love, not something that creates attraction, controls feelings or needs to be swallowed. The literary image does not establish topical safety.
