The Wisdom of Hexagram 15

Earth above Mountain — the mountain hidden within the earth, its greatness concealed beneath the surface. Hexagram 15 holds a singular distinction in the entire I Ching: it is the only hexagram in which all six lines bring good fortune. No warnings, no cautions, no reversals — every line is auspicious. This is the I Ching’s deepest teaching: that modesty, practised fully and sincerely, is the one quality that brings unbroken good fortune in every situation.

The mountain is the highest thing on earth — yet here it rests beneath the earth, its height unseen. This is the paradox of true modesty: it does not diminish greatness, it conceals it. The truly great person does not need to announce themselves. Their power is magnetic precisely because it is not performed. Modesty is not weakness — it is the most enduring form of strength.

Shadow — Dullness: The heaviness of a life without vitality or inspiration. The grey flatness that settles when one has lost touch with one’s inner light. Uninspired, unmoved, going through the motions.
