The Wisdom of Hexagram 12

“Standstill. Evil people do not further the perseverance of the superior one. The great departs; the small approaches. Heaven and earth do not unite: the image of Standstill. Thus the superior one falls back upon inner worth in order to escape the difficulties.”

Heaven above Earth — the opposite of Peace. Heaven rises ever higher, earth sinks ever lower, and between them: no communication, no union. Hexagram 12 is the complement of Hexagram 11 — the great reversal. When the world is in disorder and inferior forces prevail, the wise person does not fight or force. They withdraw into their inner worth, cultivate silence and discernment, and wait. This is not defeat — it is the profound wisdom of knowing when not to act.
