Galbanum (חלבנה — Chelbenah) is one of the 11 sacred ingredients of the Temple Ketoret (קטורת), the holy incense burned twice daily in the Jerusalem Temple. It is explicitly mentioned in the Torah (Exodus 30:34): "Take fragrant spices — stacte, onycha, and galbanum — these fragrant spices together with pure frankincense."

The Talmud (Tractate Keritot 6a) teaches that the inclusion of Galbanum — despite its pungent, unpleasant smell — teaches that even those who have strayed must be included in communal prayer. This makes Galbanum a profound symbol of unity, inclusion, and the sanctity of every soul.
