"בְּרֵאשִׁית בָּרָא אֱלֹהִים" — In the beginning, God created (Gen 1:1). The Torah opens not with law or commandment but with an act of pure creative will leaping into void. This is The Fool's gesture exactly: stepping off the cliff before the world exists to catch you. Jung identifies this moment as the emergence of the Self from the unconscious — the unus mundus, the undivided wholeness before differentiation. In Humanistic Judaism, Bereishit is read as humanity's own origin story: we are the ones who name, who create, who choose. The divine image (tzelem Elohim, Gen 1:27) is not a fixed form but a capacity — the capacity to begin.

נֹחַ — Noach · Renewal
"עֲשֵׂה לְךָ תֵּבַת עֲצֵי גֹפֶר" — Make yourself an ark of gopher wood (Gen 6:14). Noach receives an instruction that makes no rational sense — build a boat in a world not yet flooded. He obeys without argument, without proof, without a map. This is The Fool's trust made flesh: action before evidence, faith before sight. Avivah Gottlieb Zornberg (Cambridge PhD, Jerusalem Torah scholar) notes that Noach's silence throughout the flood narrative is not passivity but a form of radical presence — he holds the world in the ark as the unconscious holds the seeds of the next cycle. Jung reads the flood as the dissolution of the old ego-structure, the necessary chaos before individuation can begin anew. The rainbow covenant (Gen 9:13) — "קַשְׁתִּי נָתַתִּי בֶּעָנָן" — is the promise that every new beginning carries within it the memory of what was lost and the light of what is possible.
