Hasta means "the hand" — the hand that holds the complete destiny of an individual. The right and left hands represent positive and negative, male and female energies. The four fingers show the four motivations: artha, kama, dharma and moksha; the three phalanges represent the three gunas and three doshas; the four fingers are also the four directions; the fingers and thumbs the five senses and five elements.
