Thieves: A Story, an Aroma, a Careful Reading
Explore the legend without confusing it with evidence of product efficacy.
The Story Behind the Name
The Four Thieves story connects aromatic preparations with a tale of robbers during a plague. In the version previously told here, the robbers revealed an aromatic preparation as their supposed secret of protection.
Read this as folklore, not a verified account. This article does not establish the dates, participants, original recipe or whether any preparation protected anyone. A memorable story can inspire an aroma without becoming proof of disease prevention.
Five Oils, One Aromatic Palette
Clove, cinnamon, lemon, eucalyptus and rosemary are the five oils named in Artemisia’s Thieves-inspired cream. This contemporary ingredient list is not presented as an authenticated medieval recipe.
Clove Bud: explore its ingredient guide. Clove is ציפורן in Hebrew, not frankincense (לבונה).
Cinnamon: the guide offers background; the exact species and plant part in the finished cream require confirmation.
Lemon: explore the guide, with attention to oil type and application precautions.
Eucalyptus: the linked guide concerns Eucalyptus globulus; this does not confirm the species used in the cream.
Rosemary: explore the ingredient guide; the finished cream’s chemotype remains to be verified.
What the Evidence Must Tell Us
A useful research citation identifies the authors, publication, method, preparation tested and outcome measured. A university name and a year alone do not establish a claim.
The earlier version of this article quoted “99.96% effective” and attributed it to Weber State University in 1997. An identifiable primary study supporting that figure has not been verified for this article. It is therefore not retained as an efficacy claim.
Ingredient research, a diffusion experiment and a finished skin-care cream are not interchangeable. None should be used to promise that Artemisia’s cream disinfects air, prevents infection, boosts immunity or treats breathing symptoms.

Meet Artemisia’s Thieves & Sea Buckthorn Cream
The 30ml cream lists clove, cinnamon, lemon, eucalyptus and rosemary, alongside sea buckthorn oil. It is a contemporary aromatic skin-care product inspired by the story, not a proven reconstruction of a historical preparation.
Questions Before Use
Does a dilution percentage prove daily suitability?
No blanket daily-use assurance is made here. Suitability requires review of the exact ingredients, application site, intended user and finished formula. A patch test does not replace that review.
Is this a home-blending recipe?
No. This article provides ingredient education, not an equal-parts recipe or skin-application formula. Consult a qualified professional rather than inferring a recipe from a product’s ingredient list.
What restrictions remain?
Follow the product label. Existing cream restrictions remain pending review: no use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for children under 10. The existing restriction for people with high blood pressure or epilepsy requires professional clarification before use. Exact cinnamon identity, eucalyptus species, rosemary chemotype and lemon oil type remain unresolved.
For external use only. Avoid eyes and mucous membranes; stop use if irritation occurs. This article does not establish suitability for facial application, sensitive skin or unrestricted sun exposure.

Robert Tisserand: Essential Oil Safety, second edition. Salvatore Battaglia: The Complete Guide to Aromatherapy. Gabriel Mojay: Aromatherapy for Healing the Spirit.
These titles provide broader reading context. They are not citations for the unverified efficacy figure, evidence for the legend or safety approval of Artemisia’s finished cream.

Artemisia
