ALCHEMY & THE SOUL

The 12 Operations of Psychological Transformation

C.G. Jung · Marie-Louise von Franz · Liz Greene · Aromatherapy

Alchemy was never merely about turning lead into gold. For C.G. Jung, the alchemical laboratory was a projection screen for the unconscious — the opus magnum, the Great Work, was the transformation of the psyche itself. In Psychology and Alchemy (CW Vol. 12), Jung demonstrated that the alchemists were unknowingly mapping the journey of individuation: the lifelong process of becoming whole.

The 12 alchemical operations describe the stages of this inner work — from the first violent burning of the ego (Calcination) to the eternal spiral of return (Circulatio). Each operation has its classical element, its essential oil ally, and its psychological threshold.

This guide synthesizes four wisdom traditions: Jungian depth psychology (Jung, von Franz), psychological astrology (Liz Greene), Tarot archetypes, and clinical aromatherapy (Franchomme & Pénoël, Mojay, Tisserand).

⚖️ The Alchemical Triad: Sulfur, Mercury & Salt

The three principles that underlie all transformation — in the laboratory and in the soul

🔥

SULFUR — Soul

The volatile, the aromatic, the fiery essence. The essential oil itself — the soul of the plant captured through distillation.

MERCURY — Spirit

The carrier, the living water, the mediator between worlds. The hydrosol, the flow, the I Ching.

SALT — Body

The fixed, the physical, the crystallized matter. The soap, the cream, the embodied product.

In aromatherapy: Sulfur = the essential oil (soul of the plant) · Mercury = the carrier/hydrosol (spirit) · Salt = the finished product (body). Distillation is the alchemical act that liberates the Sulfur from the plant matter.

🔥 1. Calcination — שריפה

Element: 🔥 Fire

The first and most violent operation. The prima materia — the raw, unexamined ego — is subjected to intense fire until it is reduced to ash. Nothing false can survive. Jung identified this with the confrontation with the Shadow: the dark night of the soul, the crisis that initiates the journey. Liz Greene describes Saturn's transits as precisely this — the burning away of what we have outgrown, the collapse of structures built on illusion. The Tower card in Tarot: sudden illumination through destruction.

Essential oils: Zingiber officinale (Ginger) — ignites, purifies, mobilizes stagnant energy (Mojay); Piper nigrum (Black Pepper) — confronts, stimulates, breaks through resistance; Boswellia sacra (Frankincense) — sacred burning, bridges matter and spirit (Franchomme & Pénoël).

💧 2. Dissolution — המסה

Element: 💧 Water

The ash of Calcination is dissolved in water. Fixed patterns, rigid beliefs, and calcified defenses are softened and released. Jung saw this as the flooding of the ego by unconscious contents. Von Franz (Alchemy, p. 89): the necessary surrender before new structure can form. The High Priestess in Tarot: the deep, still waters of the unconscious.

Essential oils: Chamaemelum nobile (Roman Chamomile) — releases emotional rigidity, soothes the inner child (Mojay); Cananga odorata (Ylang Ylang) — dissolves emotional armoring; Commiphora myrrha (Myrrh) — deep release, ancestral patterns (Franchomme & Pénoël).

✂️ 3. Separation — הפרדה

Element: 🌬️ Air

From the dissolved material, the alchemist separates what is essential from what must be discarded. Jung called this differentiation: separating the ego from the unconscious, the personal from the collective. The sword of discernment — the courage to cut away what no longer serves.

Essential oils: Mentha piperita (Peppermint) — clarifies, sharpens mental discernment (Mojay); Eucalyptus globulus — clears, separates, opens space; Juniperus communis (Juniper Berry) — purifies, protects boundaries (Franchomme & Pénoël).

☯️ 4. Conjunction — חיבור

Element: 🌍 Earth

The separated elements are reunited in a sacred marriage of opposites. Jung's Mysterium Coniunctionis (CW 14): the coniunctio as union of Sol and Luna, masculine and feminine, conscious and unconscious. Not merger but integration — each pole retaining its nature while entering creative relationship.

Essential oils: Rosa damascena (Rose) — the supreme oil of the heart, union, love (Mojay); Jasminum grandiflorum (Jasmine) — sacred feminine, bridges opposites; Santalum album (Sandalwood) — grounds the sacred marriage in the body (Franchomme & Pénoël).

🌑 5. Putrefaction — ריקבון

Element: 🌍💧 Earth / Water

The conjunction must die before it can be reborn. Putrefaction is the necessary decay — the Nigredo, the blackening, the darkest phase of the work. Von Franz (Alchemy, p. 147): “Nothing new can grow in soil that has not first decomposed.” Death in Tarot: not annihilation but metamorphosis.

Essential oils: Vetiveria zizanoides (Vetiver) — roots into the earth, holds through dissolution (Mojay); Pogostemon cablin (Patchouli) — earthy, composting, regenerative; Nardostachys jatamansi (Spikenard) — deep surrender, ancestral healing (Franchomme & Pénoël).

🌿 6. Fermentation — תסיסה

Element: 🌬️💧 Air / Water

From the decay, new life stirs. Fermentation introduces a living catalyst into the decomposed matter. Jung: the transcendent function — the emergence of a new attitude that transcends the old opposites. The Star in Tarot: hope renewed, the first light after the long dark.

Essential oils: Citrus bergamia FCF (Bergamot) — uplifts, renews hope, non-phototoxic (Mojay); Pelargonium graveolens (Geranium) — balances, restores; Elettaria cardamomum (Cardamom) — warms, catalyzes (Franchomme & Pénoël).

☠️ 7. Mortification — השפלה

Element: 🌍 Earth

Mortification is the humbling of the ego — the defeat of spiritual pride, the collapse of the inflated self-image. Jung: the necessary defeat of the persona — the mask we mistake for our true face. The Hermit walks alone, stripped of all pretense, carrying only the inner light.

Essential oils: Boswellia sacra (Frankincense) — sacred solitude, inner light (Mojay); Cedrus atlantica (Cedarwood Atlas) — strength through stillness; Santalum album (Sandalwood) — quiets the ego (Franchomme & Pénoël).

⬆️ 8. Sublimation — התעלות

Element: 🌬️ Air

Matter passes directly from solid to vapor. Sublimation is the elevation of instinctual energy into higher creative or spiritual expression. The Magician in Tarot: master of all four elements, moving between worlds, transforming matter into meaning.

Essential oils: Lavandula angustifolia (Lavender) — bridges body and spirit (Mojay); Salvia sclarea (Clary Sage) — visionary, elevates perception; Ocimum basilicum (Basil) — sharpens the mercurial mind (Franchomme & Pénoël).

🌬️ 9. Distillation — זיקוק

Element: 💧 Water

The essence is separated from the impure through repeated cycles of heating and cooling. Each cycle yields a purer distillate. Temperance in Tarot: the angel pouring liquid between two vessels — distillation as dynamic equilibrium. This is the operation most intimate to aromatherapy — steam distillation liberates the Sulfur from the plant.

Essential oils: Neroli bigarade (Neroli) — the quintessence of refinement (Mojay); Rosa damascena (Rose Otto) — the most distilled of all floral essences; Helichrysum italicum (Immortelle) — distills wisdom from wounds (Franchomme & Pénoël).

✨ 10. Multiplication — הכפלה

Element: 🔥 Fire

The Philosopher's Stone multiplies itself — a small amount transforms vast quantities. The integrated Self radiates outward, transforming relationships and the world. Jung: the individuated person becomes a source of healing for others.

Essential oils: Rosa damascena (Rose) — love that multiplies by giving (Mojay); Cananga odorata (Ylang Ylang) — joy that overflows; Citrus sinensis (Sweet Orange) — abundance, solar warmth (Franchomme & Pénoël).

💎 11. Coagulation — התגבשות

Element: 🌍 Earth

The volatile is fixed. The spirit crystallizes into permanent, embodied form — the lapis. Von Franz: “The lapis is the Self made visible in matter.” The Sun in Tarot: pure, joyful, embodied consciousness.

Essential oils: Boswellia sacra (Frankincense) — the sacred made solid (Mojay); Santalum album (Sandalwood) — grounds spirit in body; Vetiveria zizanoides (Vetiver) — crystallized earth, stable and complete (Franchomme & Pénoël).

🔄 12. Circulatio — מחזוריות

Element: 🔥💧🌬️🌍 All

The final operation — and the one that dissolves all finality. The Stone returns to the prima materia and the process begins again, at a higher level. The Ouroboros — the serpent eating its own tail. Von Franz: “The work is never finished. It deepens.” The Wheel of Fortune turns eternally. We do not complete the work. We deepen it.

Essential oils: Salvia sclarea (Clary Sage) — visionary, spiral wisdom (Mojay); Vetiveria zizanoides (Vetiver) + Rosa damascena (Rose) — earth and heart in eternal cycle; Boswellia sacra (Frankincense) — the sacred breath that returns (Franchomme & Pénoël).

🌀 The Spiral Path

The alchemical journey is not linear. You will meet Calcination again after Coagulation. You will dissolve what you thought was crystallized. This is not failure — this is the nature of the Work.

“The goal of the opus is not perfection but wholeness.” — C.G. Jung, Psychology and Alchemy, CW 12
